This past Friday, I had the privilege of visiting the Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial, thanks to my son-in-law, Jeremy, who had driven me to an appointment in La Jolla.
After the appointment, on the way back to San Diego, Jeremy pointed out the giant white cross rising against an incredibly blue California sky and asked if I’d like to visit.
I said yes. There are a lot of veterans in my family, starting with my dad, Skip Lael, who was a United States Marine and served in the Second World War. My brother, Jerry, also served, as did his daughter, my niece, Kelly. And others.
Well, the monument is amazing. Besides the towering white cross, there are memorials to hundreds, if not thousands, of veterans from all branches of the military.
These brave men and women are one of the main reasons we are able to celebrate our 250th anniversary as a nation.
Their courage, dedication and loyalty deserve to be remembered.
To all veterans and active military members everywhere, whether in this world or the next, thank you.
