As I write this, I’m recovering from a nasty cold. I’ve spent the last few weeks grappling with this—ironically, it started as soon as I finished my 6-week round of TMS treatments–but I’m getting better, however slowly.
Last week, I mentioned Julia Cameron’s marvelous book, “The Artist’s Way”, which I originally read three decades ago, when I was still finding my way as a writer. I wrote Morning Pages, a technique Ms. Cameron recommended, and I found it very helpful. I penned my pages diligently for years, and usually, my entries were prayers.
At some point, I stopped (writing pages, not praying), and I believe that was part of the reason I struggled with depression for so long.
Why do Morning Pages help writers and any other kind of artist?
I’m not entirely sure, but I suspect it’s because they allow us to vent, spill things out of our heads and onto the paper, clearing the way for better thoughts and fresh ideas.
Recently, I rediscovered “The Artist’s Way”, the updated 30th Anniversary edition. It was accompanied by a paperback journal for—you guessed it, Morning Pages.
I’ve begun to write them again, first thing in the morning, while I’m sipping that first cup of coffee, and usually still in my nightgown. As before, they are prayers.
And guess what. They are helping. A lot.
If you’ve been struggling as an artist, read the book, buy a spiral notebook, and write whatever comes into your head.
